Esperance De Tunis have rejected the decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to replay the 2nd leg of the CAF Champions League final. The Tunisian club was crowned on Saturday, 31 May as Champions of Africa but the crown was rescinded following a CAF Emergency meeting ordering for a return of the winner’s medals and trophy for a replay of the 2nd leg.
Esperance are however not interested in returning their prized assets and are set to hold a meeting to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS).
“Esperance will organise an emergency meeting in the coming days to challenge this decision to the competent international authorities and take all necessary measures to legally defend its rights,” a released on the club’s twitter account read.
A release by CAF cited safety reasons as one of the factors resulting in why the game could not travel the stipulated 90 minutes but the Prime Minister of Tunisia Youssef Chamed has hailed the country’s security force stating they remain loyal to Esperance and Tunisia.
”Our security forces are an example in the world and those who question Tunisia’s security. It bears responsibility to the audience of Esperance on its discipline in the last game. We recognize the right of Esperance and the right of any Tunisian association”
The Champions League final replay is scheduled to take place in a neutral venue after the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
