Know for their vibrancy and widely regarded as the toughest “Nawettan” zone, spectators from the Serekunda East mini stadium yesterday afternoon, 27th August, witnessed another derby match between London United of London Corner and Ball Conge of Bundungka Kunda.
A minute silent was observered in honour of the former London United goalkeeper and manager Gilbert Correa, who passed away this July, age 36.
After collecting three silverware, league Cup, FA Cup and the Super Cup, Ball Conge spent eight years in the wilderness before re-emerging from relegation zone to the “Nawettan” proper of 2019.
On the other hand, London United won a league Cup and hard never been drowned to relegation. Their two previous meetings were all won by Ball Conge: 2-0 and 6-1.’London United were again bulldozed 3-1 making it three times in a row.
In an interview with Logic Sport News, Ball Conge forward Badara Njie, who was born and raised in London Corner and had even played for London United up to semi final, had this to say, “Congratulations to my team mates and hard luck to my former club London United, better luck next time.”
“I feel great today cos the expectation was so high. You can imagine the weight, the burden upon me. The magnitude of the rivalry is something else. Playing against the team that groomed and made me the player that i am today is quite a mixed feelings for me. But this is football. It happens everywhere. Even professional level.”
The lost son didn’t get to score a goal but was a torn in the flesh and was the very architect of their victory.
“Every match is a final and we are not only here to compete but to win trophies.”
The lanky striker managed to score four goals in five matches during the qualifying rounds which includes two free kicks and two penalty kicks.
After their defeat, the London United Captain spoke positively and believed that they will bounce back. “It wasn’t a bad game, though we lost 3-1 to our rivals but we will go back and work towards it and surely bounce back.”
“We conceded an early goal and we fought for an equaliser but we couldn’t score. We came to the second half promising ourselves that we will not loose the game and we eventually scored a goal. Upon pressuring them more and more to get another goal, they punished us from the errors we made, which i will blame the team as a whole, but not to specifically point finger to any player.”
“We will go back to the field to work on our tactics, our programs and see how best we can rectify the mistakes.”
“We want to apologise to the fans because the performance was not up to par. We failed them because we made a promise to them and they really deserve going home with smiles on their faces. But unfortunately they were very very disappointed with the results, especially the scoreline which was very poor.”
“So we will go back and fix the damage we did and surface to the top, God willing.”
