The problem with football in this country is not that we lack players or players are not determined to represent the country etc, to me the problem is the way football is governed.
Only in the gambia you will see players refusing to come and represent the country when needed, representing the country through football is every footballers dream but how comes in our country is the other way round?
To me is because of the miss management of players through not valuing them and managers failing to create a conducive atmosphere for them so that players can feel some pride and have the enthusiasm to represent the country. But the number one problem is because we don’t have the right people in the right places at the GFF so as long as this continue we will not archieve anything.
You see , it does not make much difference how much other knowledge or experience anyone running something possesses; if he/she is unable to achieve results through people, he/she is worthless of the position he/she occupies.
These people have not proved anything to this country that they have the technical know-how and enthusiasm regarding the job given to them. Football and sports in general is part of nation building it shouldn’t taken for granted, even it requires government interfering in other to make sure we start seeing progress in our football especially at senior level I think it should be done because people are really tired of witnessing the same behaviour been repeated again and again.
Those running the football lack the technical know-how and willingness to go the extra mile through sacrificing in order to achieve results that is why we’ve not been making progress at senior level. We’ve failed to qualify for a major international tournament at senior level several times and the reason is because the manager don’t learn from their past mistakes therefore keep repeating the same mistakes again and again.
When you fail once or twice you suppose to learn something from that experience so that the next time you can come with a different approach. But every time is the same problem like lack of early preparation, playing not willing to come and play because they are not in a good amity with some officials, mismanagement of funds etc.
Finally selection to the national teams should be based on merits, players who deserve to be called should be called to represent the country not the other way round. Because as long as that behavior continues we will not archieve results. Players need to know that being called to represent your nation is something they should be willing to give out their best and be proud of playing for the country. And players need to be humble and accept to be instructed, it is in the nature of gambians we feel big easily.
Players need to stop raising shoulders and do what is expected of them as players, because if the players don’t have the right attitude and behavior when called to represent the country no matter how determine and hardworking the managers and officials are the team won’t achieve results. Gambian football is bigger than a couple of players or one, if a player is not called someone who the coach believe is showing more willingness and determination will be called to take his place.
The senior national team is not in order so it will be difficult for results to be achieved, players need to speak up let people know what exactly is causing the problem of players not willing to come and represent the country so that the problem can be solved. Let’s put the nation’s interest first in anything that has to do with national development because is the only way we can all achieve progress.
