The West Africa Football Union (WAFU) will stage the first edition of the Women’s WAFU Cup of Nations scheduled to kickoff on the 13th December, 2019 in Sierra Leone.Ahead of the tournament proper, Gambia Head Coach Mariama Bom Sowe said, the Women’s Scorpios have started regrouping together in a training session meant to prepare the girls for the tournament.
“We started training on Monday and on daily basis until Friday. We have 30 players currently with the team and that number will be reduced to 25 in three weeks time”.
According to Bom, the Gambia will take part in the tournament not as underdogs
“because if you look at the countries that are expected to participate, we have played most of them. We lost to Mali and beat Bissau home and drew away in our recent matches”.
Mauritania, Sierra Leone and Senegal are other West African neighbors to take part in the maiden edition of the Women’s tournament. ” I dont think we will have problems playing with most of these sides. It will not be an easy ride though but our quest is to reach to the Semi Finals God willing”, she assured.
She commended the GFF for “the transformation and undertakings” for the promotion of Women’s football. “I am delighted to be the coach that will take the Gambia to her maiden appearance to the tournament and this is a big achievement not only to me as a coach but also to the development of Women’s football in the country.
We are currently witnessing so many developments in Women’s Football. We are now boosting of playing many matches; Super Cup, the FA Cup, League and the various Nationals Teams are also engaged at international matches. So the GFF is just doing a wonderful job and the President is the Champion of Women’s football
