The Gambia Football Federation Zonal Football Competition (Super Nawettan ) has kicked off with 2018 champions Sere Kunda East opening the curtains with a defense of their title to a 1-0 victory over Bakau at the Independence Stadium on Saturday November 2. Modou Lamin Nyassi scored the only goal of the game at the brink of one minute added on time with a well taken goal to give East all the needed three points.
Record holders East kicked off with great intentions and so it did go their way through decent inter change of passes which continued through the end of the first period. After resuming from the locker room, East continued to dominate the game and could have buried it with Kalipha Manneh and Abdoulie Bah both having goal scoring chances but non was able to add onto Nyassi’s account.Bakau although got better in the second period with Edrissa Jammeh having the best chance for the Kachikally boys but he failed to connect at the disappointment of Bakau fans.
The match continued with the narrowest of margins for Sere Kunda East to top Group A and heralding their intent for a back to back win at the tournament’s maiden D200,000:00 Mega stake sponsored by Africell.
The comeback of Bakau to the tournament was seen as a major boost to engender more competition further to the increase of teams to twenty (20) cutting across major Nawettan centres in the country. “This is one of the main objectives of the GFF to ensure that football is played everywhere in the country and to bring the Nawettan centers in one big tournament“, Gen Lang Tamba noted.
The opening kick off was attended by Executive members of the GFF led by President Lamin Kaba Bajo, Senior Management staff of Africell Company limited headed by Senior Manager of Corporate Affairs and Media consultant Musa Sise, Executive Director of the National Sports Council and a cross section of other dignitaries.
